The Hunter is one of the few runs where the destination, not the group, chooses the vehicle. Cellar-door driveways vary enormously: some have sealed coach parking and a turning circle, others are gravel tracks with low branches and nowhere for a fourteen-metre coach to turn around. For up to about twenty-four people an executive minibus goes almost anywhere in the valley and is the vehicle we recommend most often for this run. At twenty-five to twenty-seven a midi-coach is usually fine, but the venues need checking first. Beyond that, a full-size coach is comfortable on the motorway and restricted in the valley, so we plan the day around venues that can take one — or split the group across two smaller vehicles, which often works better than it sounds because it halves the queue at every tasting bench.

One pick-up point saves the most time on this run, because every extra suburb is collected before a two-and-a-half hour drive rather than after it. Send the cellar-door list with booked arrival times and, if you can, the venue's own advice on coach access — most of them will tell you plainly what size vehicle they can take, and that single email prevents the worst version of this day. If the group is celebrating and wants drinks on board, say so when you book: alcohol is permitted on private function bookings by prior arrangement only, and never on school or youth charters.
