Port Stephens is a north run: the M1 Pacific Motorway past Newcastle, then Nelson Bay Road east through Raymond Terrace, Salamander Bay and into Nelson Bay itself. Around 205 kilometres and two and a half to three hours, which puts it right on the edge of a day trip and squarely inside a comfortable weekend. Most of the groups we carry go for two or three days — club trips, staff weekends, milestone birthdays, family reunions — and the itinerary usually gathers around the same handful of things: the dolphin cruise boats at d'Albora Marina in Nelson Bay, the sand dunes behind Anna Bay, the beaches at Shoal Bay and Fingal Bay, and a long lunch somewhere with a view. Because it is an overnight run, this is a luggage job as much as a passenger one, and the vehicle we recommend reflects that.

Overnight means bags, and bags mean a proper luggage bay. For up to about fourteen people a high-roof Sprinter with a rear bay is comfortable and fits into resort and holiday-park driveways easily. Between fifteen and twenty-four an executive minibus works, though a weekend group of twenty-four with a bag each is close to its limit. From about twenty-five upward a midi-coach or full-size coach with underfloor bins is the honest recommendation: the legs are long enough for reclining seats to matter and the luggage has somewhere to go. The one constraint worth checking early is your accommodation: resort forecourts and holiday parks vary in what they can take, and a coach that cannot turn around has to reverse out of somewhere it should not have entered. Pick-up and set-down
Give us the accommodation address, not just the suburb, and tell us if it is a holiday park, a resort or a private house — the approach and the turning space are different in each case, and the person who books is rarely the person who has to reverse. If the itinerary includes a dolphin cruise or a dune tour, send the operator, the departure time and the meeting point: those are third-party bookings with their own timing, and we plan the coach around them rather than the other way around. For the return leg, confirm the pickup address if it differs from where you stayed, and give us one mobile number that will be answered on the day.
